Nellie Jacobs, Grading the Teacher

The beginning of each school year is normally a tense time for everyone involved in education. Students anxiously anticipate a new school, grade, classmates and teachers. Teachers hope their carefully prepared lessons will be challenging to, as well as absorbed by, their pupils. It takes time for both to adjust to each other's expectations - and peculiarities. Parents worry whether their children are starting the year on the right foot, making a good impression on the teacher, and keeping up with the workload.

These times, however, are definitely not normal. Their uncertainties are the reason for this column. Consider the following contentious issues: funding cutbacks, public school closings, reduction of teachers' aides to students with special needs, fewer extra curricular activities, unprecedented retirements of experienced educators, and massive hiring of new graduates.

What does all this mean? If we are parents of school-age children, more than ever we must be diligent about the quality of their education. If we are teachers, we must solicit the involvement and support of our students' parents. If we are students, we must be particularly responsible and communicative in order to get the best education possible.

"CLASS ACTION" is an evolving, interactive forum open to anyone interested in our children's education. Are you a parent, student or educator with school solutions, opinions, experiences and stories you want to share? Please contribute. I invite experts in the field to discuss pressing issues in education. We'd love to hear from each one of you. Humour is welcome.

Parents: If you are having problems, perhaps we can help you find solutions.

Teachers: What are five rules parents or students should follow when dealing with schools or teachers? What are your expectations of your students, parents, yourself?

Students: What makes a good teacher and lesson? What would you like to see improved at your school?

Participate in our discussions; click on the "Post a Comment" button below. It’s being at ease with the students. It’s being able to laugh with them and perhaps sharing stories related to the issues being taught. " Nellie Jacobs, Grading the Teacher

One of the essential ingredients of a great teacher is a sense of humour. It diffuses tense situations, adds a perspective and can provide comfort in topics that may be difficult. Donna Rouzaud submitted the following story sent by a friend in San Francisco. “He’s originally from Nova Scotia but has been living in the US for many years. …He is quite a storyteller and is great at imitating accents, so it was hilarious when he told us in person.”

Donna's friend and his classmates played this prank on their uptight teacher:

“John Marsters was my high school English teacher. He was a mountain of a man, barrel-chested, ramrod straight in stature, but beneath it all a somewhat humorless man.

“If one of his students rose to answer a question and chose to rest one hand on the desk for support, Mr. Marsters would invariably say, 'Now son, that desk has been there for over fifty years. It’s not necessary for you to support it. Please stand up straight.'

“A few of us decided to test his theory. After school, carefully and methodically, we removed every nut, bolt and screw from the desk of one of his better-behaved students (a young lad named Byron), who would never be suspected of any kind of foolishness. The scene was set.

“English was the first class the following day. As Mr. Marsters entered the classroom, our foil rose to his feet to ask stoic Mr. Marsters a question. Mr. Marsters, noticing that Byron was resting one hand on the desk, repeated his favorite refrain, 'Now Byron, that desk has been there for over fifty years. It’s not necessary for you to support it. Please stand up straight.' As Byron complied with Mr. Marsters’ request, he gently pushed the desk sideways, causing the desk to collapse and crash to the floor in a dozen different pieces.

“Stoic John Marsters smiled.”

Have you ever participated in or witnessed a harmless school prank? Haim Ginott, teacher, pyschotherapist, writer. Nellie Jacobs, Grading the Teacher

Darr Maqbool submitted several wonderful stories about his best and worst teachers. Through another source, we discovered that Darr is a “mini-celebrity” in Calgary, Alberta: A-Channel weatherman, he was voted “most beloved Calgarian” and “sexiest man.” Interestingly, Darr has fond memories of a childhood teacher who didn’t hesitate to apply corporal punishment to students.

Darr was born in Nairobi, Kenya and schooled under the "British System" where, he says, there wasn’t much room for independent thinking but instead a propensity for cramming and memorizing methodology. Four teachers stand out miles apart from the rest in his high school years. In Nairobi, a math teacher called "Master Hashmee" ("To this day I don't know what his full name is!! - like Hulk Hogan; what's his name??!!"), and Joey D'Souza, an English teacher who now resides in Toronto. Upon moving to Toronto as a student, he had to undertake grade 13 for university preparation and at George S. Henry High School he recalls Ms Killpatrick, a math teacher and Miss Bird, another English teacher:

Master Hashmee
"Master Hashmee": the "scariest" of all teachers.... since corporal punishment was/(still is?) the norm in a colonial school, it wasn't surprising to receive a lightening speed slap from Hashmee during his class if you didn't do his homework or were being mischievous. During his reign over me I was the recipient of one such slap right in front of everybody in the class.

“Once I saw his loafer fly by me and find its target a few desks behind me!! Chalk dusters were common projectiles in his classes. That’s the way it was and it produced results: Hashmee would take labelled "dumb" students and make them shine with distinctions at the end of the year.

“Students lived in "guarded" fear of him and the ONLY way to skip the wrath of Hashmee was to work diligently in his class and do his homework. The homework had to be done and, if you copied someone else's - it didn't take him long to ascertain that - then he would uncoil and you were dead meat!! At least, that was the thought and feeling. Essentially Hashmee was a concerned teacher; wanted the best of you.

"I think he believed and proved that if you acquired good study habits you could do anything especially math. He was a kind man and a religious man. When he gave you a sly smile when he was pleased with what you did, that mere tiny curl of his smile made you think the world of yourself.

"In short, you have just proven to Hashmee that you are in tune with his material and life's going to be okay. I attained that level of "nirvana" with Hashmee about a third of the way of the total time that I had him as a teacher (about 3 yrs) and thereafter life was beautiful. I came out of high school with a distinction in math. From the parents’ side: they all wanted their kids to have Hashmee as a teacher!! He had the ability to put the kids on the right tracks....."

Joey d'Souza
"Joey d'Souza in short has hip!!! He wore Ray Ben shades (with the case strung on his belt) and smoked a pipe; he was/is cool!! His approach was to talk to you if you were off the tracks regarding work/studies, etc. He was also a Scout leader and heavily involved with the East African car rallies He was well versed with his English material and taught you ways to express yourself using the English language. He would talk to you as if you were equal to him, always showed concern if you were troubled and always was there to dish out advice. I’m still in contact with him and his wife Dianne: we hook up in Toronto or Calgary during visits."

Ms Kilpatrick
"Ms Kilpatrick was a prettier and gentler version of Hashmee except the slaps and flying high heels. [She was] an expert in math, so my liking towards her was a continuation of Hashmee's set foundation. She was very good at conveying her material to the class. The other thing I liked about her was the way she carried herself: always dressed well and looking fresh with a smile."

Miss Bird
"The first time I sat in her very, very informal class (post-hippie era in Toronto), I was at a loss: she would take a sentence out of a book (Milton’s Paradise [frkn] Lost!! or Leonard Cohen’s Beautiful Losers), then throw it to the students to discuss, dissect and elaborate. My mind that had been trained in the colonial schools was never asked to do that and I sat in a few of these classes feeling like a dimwit, unable to utter a word. The other students would come up with or hold a discussion of her request and I'd sit back and say to myself, 'How are they able to think that?'

"During this time, Miss Bird would prod me for an answer or explanation and I'd fumble my way through it. After a few weeks of this prodding and fumbling, something happened - like a dam giving way. Thereafter and to this day, you would be hard pressed to shut me up with independent thought and speech!!

"All of these teachers (except Miss Bird) were "cut'n'dry" regarding the material they taught - and damn good at it. Miss Bird appeared "wishy-washy" re her material but I think that was the nature/style of her course and she was instrumental in making me think - and think independently - which was/is extremely rewarding."

DARR
And then, Darr became an instructor himself…

“Oh yes, from the other side ... For some 3 years, I taught aviation meteorology at Mount Royal College (Calgary) to commercial pilots. [My] attitude, as a soccer coach of many years and perhaps [through] Hashmee's influence, was/is that if you don't put out, then get out. [It] was a tough course and taught extremely well as indicated by Transport Canada examiners; [I] was asked by the course chairman once to soften my stance on the failure rate. [I] told him to go fly a kite and have a nice day!! [My] thinking was and still is that if “Joe” goes and plasters himself against the mountains because he didn't want to learn meteorology then I'd say "poor Joe died in an air crash accident," but if Joe was carrying 250 passengers with him and slammed into the mountains, then I'd say "What a shmuck - should have done better in class!"

Let’s hear your stories about best/worst teachers. We expect that teachers today are more understanding and, therefore, sensitive to the possible ramifications of their actions or words on individual students. Here is what Leslie has to say:

“I had a music teacher in grade 8. I wanted special attention from her (I think I was emotionally needy) and had written her home phone number on the chalk board (which I learned through a private piano teacher). The lady became so incensed with what I'd done that she hauled me out of class, chewed me out and even called my parents. She said I had to learn to respect boundaries (or something along those lines). I was filled with deep shame.

“I carried that image in my mind for over forty years until I realized that I needed to heal it. Had I been the teacher, I'd like to think I would have quietly taken the student aside and said, "Seems to me you need a little extra attention" and then made a point to focus on her. I have visualized this kinder version of the story countless times over the past year ...and I believe that it's undoing the damage that the early experience had on me and my feelings of being not good enough. “

Do you have a memory of an unpleasant experience with a teacher that you ultimately resolved? I've been working hard to instil in my children particular values and ethics I consider extremely important to their future roles as citizens - possibly leaders - of this country. Please help me to reinforce these values.

Please:

1. Don't use sarcasm. It only serves to belittle - and it undermines self-confidence.

2. Don't deride students in public or in private. If you do, you are abusing your position of trust while placing them in a frustratingly powerless position.

3. Don't reveal your dislike of the subject you are teaching. Students are helpless to do anything about it. They will wonder about the quality of your teaching - and so will I.

4. Don't drink alcohol, smoke or promote illegal drugs in the presence of your students. I would expect you, who are in a position of authority, not influence my children in that direction.

5. Don't swear at or within hearing range of students. It is our responsibility to teach them to express themselves with an acceptable vocabulary, as well as to vent their anger and frustration in an appropriate manner.

Please:

1. Do teach students to respect themselves and others by treating them with respect.

2. Do listen to students' questions. Let them know no question is stupid.

3. Do answer students with patience. They truly want to understand.

4. Do encourage students to participate and to express themselves. Reward them for a job well done.

5. Do allow adequate time for assimilation of information, discussion, debate and questions. Students will feel good about their increasing knowledge.

6. Since not everything is learned by absolutely everyone immediately or at the same time, offer a different approach or style of teaching that might be more successful.

7. Connect the relevancy of what you are teaching to the world around your students.

8. Be prepared. Be organized. These are essential skills for success that students will hopefully emulate.

9. Be prompt. Return students' graded work quickly. Nellie Jacobs, Grading the Teacher

When my wise, nine year old neighbour Amy came home with a list of complaints about her Grade Four long-term substitute teacher, her parents listened and asked her if she wanted them to speak with the principal. “No,” she said, “I want to do this myself.” She was concerned their interference would have a negative impact on her and her classmates. Rather, she chose to role play with her family different approaches. When she was comfortable with her script, Amy made an appointment with the teacher. She told her the impact of the teacher’s behaviour and words and asked the teacher to approach her class differently. The teacher listened and followed Amy’s advice with successful results.

When it comes to supply teachers, often students are not as solution-oriented or patient as Amy. Especially when they work as a group to cause chaos, students can be exceptionally challenging for substitute teachers. Elizabeth Huggins describes a prank her high school classmates played on one they didn’t care for. The incident had a profound effect on the poor supply teacher:

“Our substitute Grade 10 French teacher was a nervous, jittery type so we were always trying to put him over the edge. Scott who was always in the midst of the action tried to make the teacher ask him questions by talking or staring out the window not paying attention to class. This escalated until one morning after a huge snowfall we decided to do the teacher in. Before school started a bunch of us piled snow as high as we could under the first floor French class window and proceeded to French class for second period. Half way into the class, Scott did his talking bit and staring out the window bit and the teacher started asking him questions. Finally, Scott stood up and said "You are always picking on me and I CAN'T TAKE IT ANYMORE!" With that he went to the windowsill, jumped on it and jumped out the window. On cue we all rushed to the window and starting shrieking so the teacher couldn't see Scott's landing.

As the teacher ran out of the classroom to get the Principal, Scott ran into the school brushed all of the snow off and returned to his seat. When the teacher and the Principal returned we were all in our seats just like angels and when asked, we said "what are you talking about?"

The teacher resigned that day.”

Everybody has a substitute teacher story to tell. However, how often do we let our child’s teacher know how appreciative we are? As an example to our kids it is important to acknowledge the kind acts and positive experiences we have with the people who are part of our lives. Feedback to a teacher can be made in the form of a simple phone-call, e-mail, a written note or letter with – as an added bonus - copies sent to administration. Some of my adult children still keep in touch with their favourite teachers. My son Ricky currently working in advertising, periodically visits the classes of his former high school media teacher Mrs. Gordon to talk to her students about communication in the workplace.

Ian Hardy, who developed “Creativity Camp” for adults writes about his best teacher:

“I never paid attention in high school, and also, rarely made an effort. This ultimately reflected my grades. By grade 12 it was certain that I was going to stay back another year while most of my friends went to college or university.

“My English teacher, Mr. Beer, took me aside one year and had a heart to heart chat with me about "my future direction". He saw bright things and saw potential in me that I did not. [He] gave me guidance and a purpose to strive for. Ever since that day I have put forth my best effort in everything I do.

“I have gone on to graduate college, worked for a few of the best companies in the world, also traveled the world and have a successful profitable business.

“The pinnacle of this experience is locating Mr. Been and thanking him for his major influence on me. He has since retired from teaching also remembered our conversation.”

Have you told your favourite teachers how important they are to you? Would they exploit the opportunity, designing standards so ridiculously low as to guarantee a glut of effortless good grades?

"Surprisingly, the answer is no. Experience at Robert Wagner Middle School in Manhattan shows that students who are given a role in the assessment process can and do rise to the occasion. Given the appropriate direction by their teachers, youngsters are able to accurately evaluate their strengths and weaknesses and pinpoint where to focus their efforts to get the most out of what they’re learning. As a result, students view assessment not as an arbitrary form of reward or humiliation (a common perception of middle school students), but as a positive tool for personal growth...."

Full details are posted on http://www.interactiveclassroom.com/articles_006.htm

THE TEACHER PROSPECT

RECEIVED BY E-MAIL ...

After being interviewed by the school administration, the eager teaching prospect said:

"Let me see if I've got this right. You want me to go into that room with all those kids, and fill their every waking moment with a love for learning. And I'm supposed to instill a sense of pride in their ethnicity, modify their disruptive behavior, Observe them for signs of abuse and even censor their T-shirt messages and dress habits.

"You want me to wage a war on drugs and sexually transmitted diseases, check their backpacks for weapons of mass destruction, and raise their self esteem.

"You want me to teach them patriotism, good citizenship, sportsmanship, fair play, how to register to vote, how to balance a checkbook, and how to apply for a job. I am to check their heads for lice, maintain a safe environment, recognize signs of antisocial behavior, offer advice, write letters of recommendation for student employment and scholarships, encourage respect for the cultural diversity of others, and oh, make sure that I give the girls in my class fifty percent of my attention.

"My contract requires me to work on my own time after school, evenings and weekends grading papers. Also, I must spend my summer vacation at my own expense working toward advance certification and a Masters degree. And on my own time you want me to attend committee and faculty meetings, PTA meetings, and participate in staff development training.

"I am to be a paragon of virtue, larger than life, such that my very presence will awe my students into being obedient and respectful of authority. And I am to pledge allegiance to family values and this current administration.

You want me to incorporate technology into the learning experience, monitor web sites, and relate personally with each student. That includes deciding who might be potentially dangerous and/or liable to commit a crime in school. I am to make sure all students pass the mandatory state exams, even those who don't come to school regularly or complete any of their assignments. Plus, I am to make sure that all of the students with handicaps get an equal education regardless of the extent of their mental or physical handicap. And I am to communicate regularly with the parents by letter, telephone, newsletter and report card.

"All of this I am to do with just a piece of chalk, a computer, a few books, a bulletin board, a big smile AND on a starting salary that qualifies my family for food stamps!

"You want me to do all of this and yet you expect me. . . . . . .
